1. Creative Writing

I’m a huge SNL fan. My wife and I have tried watching every episode since season 45 as it airs. We’ve had some bugs to iron out, but we have caught a good portion, probably 90%, as they’ve aired.

That means I was really sad when they didn’t have an episode for all of November. I wasn’t sure how long their hiatus would be, but I decided to take matters into my own hands. Between 11/9/2020 - 11/17/2020, I wrote a 28 page SNL script, complete with a cold open, two digital shorts, and four “live” sketches.

To be fair, three of the sketches had rough drafts that I had written in 2019, but I still wrote five sketches by myself over the period of two weeks. One of which was written from start to finish over the course of an hour or two. I have since gone in and made some minor modifications, as several of the sketches didn’t really have an ending; one of the issues of writing the sketches alone. If you’re interested, you can download the full script here.

I also started work on some stand up comedy scripts, in case COVID ever dies down. I’m still testing the waters on this one, but it’s also been really fun trying to work everything together.

2. DevOps

I’ve been slowly working on this site, as well as another site for the secret project I’ve mentioned in other blog posts. I have some other ideas for websites, but I need to have time to even think about how to put those together. I’d like to do Nextcloud, self-hosted BitWarden, Remotely, and/or Kodi MD if at all possible.

I need to start by getting my new ZFS disks added to an SMB or NFS share for my internal Kodi system first, though.

3. Work

I replaced a laptop display earlier this week. Dell Latitude 5440s are pretty annoying when it comes to the display replacements. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice that there aren’t any screws, but I think I’d rather have more screws than the double-sided adhesive that’s currently in the system.

I have a new coworker starting at the end of this month. We’re pretty good friends, and I hope this doesn’t affect our friendship outside of work. He’s a pretty good guy, but still.

4. Fun

I just picked up Cyberpunk 2077, which worked (with some minor issues) day one on Linux out of the box. A HUGE thanks to CDPR who provided Valve with the pre-release copy to test and make sure Proton would mostly work. And given some of the bugs the game has, it was practically no different from playing on console or a not very good system anyway.

The newest version of Proton fixed a lot, if not the rest, of the Proton specific bugs, so all that’s left now is the bugs from the game itself. I can safely say that I never expected to be able to play a DX12 title day one with only minor issues after 2 years of Proton development.

I also picked up a Pinephone. It’s a fun little device, but I definitely could not use it as my daily driver yet. I had some fun with Manjaro ARM, and just put in an SD Card with UBPorts today, and dang, it’s a pretty nice little system. I had tested UBPorts out with my Pixel 3a, but apparently both WiFi and SIM access were spotty, so I reinstalled Android on the system. I tried to get Lineage on the 3a, but it just wouldn’t take, so I ended up just giving in and leaving it with stock Android. Maybe when I’m not burned out from work I’ll take another stab at it.

Also, I installed Fedora on my main system and it’s running pretty well. The only issue I’ve had is swapping my new RTX 2070 with my RX 580 in order to play Cyberpunk 2077. However, after the install and RPM Fusion, it works flawlessly, which is to be expected of a distro with so much rapport.

Wrapping Up

That’s a lot more than I anticipated to write when I started this document. Please check out that Spec Script, I worked very hard on it and want to get it out there. Keep in mind that the Cold Open is a little dated; I wrote it directly after the election results.

Anyway, take care, and take care of each other.
